Inside a car, the major part of the injected parts must withstand to light, scratch (five fingers Ford, sclerometer) and abrasion (Crockmeter, alternate revolving abrasion …). Despite the difficulty for numerous materials to satisfy the combination
This high level of performance has contributed to hire, Cousin-Tessier at the first place of the European material suppliers for injected airbag covers. While the cover is not painted, the Téfabloc is highly exposed, and has to withstand to light, scratch and abrasion, in addition to functional properties for the airbag unfurl. For this application, the proposed grades are semi-rigid and based on SEBS or TPO. Other applications such as gear box stick knob and dashboard pad require more softness. A new generation of special SEBS based Téfabloc allows decreasing hardness down to 80 shore A, while scratch and abrasion resistance remain at the expected level. Also in light colours these SEBS based compounds comply with automotive inner parts specifications.
For even lower hardnesses, and down to 60 shore A, another class of compounds based on TPU - SEBS is proposed, and marketed under the brand Téfabloc TU. Compared to pure TPU, the Téfabloc TU grants the advantage of a lower hardness, avoiding fogging risk. Injection process and release from mould are easy. Moreover, surface aspect will perfectly clone the mould different roughness, making possible mat and glossy areas on the same part. Two series are proposed. The Téfabloc TU 600 series, partly made of conventional polyurethane, is to be used for injected parts in dark colours. The Téfabloc TU 800 series includes aliphatic polyurethane. It’s light withstand makes all colours possible while remaining less costly than a pure aliphatic TPU.
Beside these new products, Cousin-Tessier, Saplast and TCT-Polska also offer a wide range of flexible PVC compounds, that combine scratch and abrasion resistance without competitor at such price level.
